El Zapato is one of the most recognized natural postcards of Capilla del Monte: a curious sandstone rock formation that, after millions of years of erosion by wind and water, ended up with the silhouette of a huge shoe. It is a natural geoform that became a symbol of the city and a must-stop for those traveling through the Valle de Punilla. It's practically next to the center, so it's a short and accessible outing for the whole family. From the top, reached by climbing a staircase, a panoramic view opens up of Cerro Uritorco, the Sierras de Córdoba, the Dique El Cajón and its shoreline. The property operated for years as a tourist complex with services; today the rock remains freely accessible and attracts both photographers and those curious about the mystical side of the area.

A bit of history
The stone owes its shape to differential erosion on sandstone over thousands of years, which wore away the softer material and left the shoe silhouette. Over time, due to ground movements linked to nearby waterworks, the formation was reinforced with cement to preserve it. Around the rock grew a legend of Comechingón origin: according to tradition, every thirteen moons the caciques, healers, and shamans of the people would gather beside it to meditate and deliberate on common matters. For decades the site operated as the Complejo El Zapato, with tourist services; that complex was later abandoned, though the formation remains an attraction open to the public.

It's a short outing, ideal to combine with other day trips. Go up with sturdy footwear because the staircase is sloped. Don't scratch or damage the rock and respect the natural environment. Go early or at sunset for better photos and less heat. Note that the old complex with services no longer operates as before, so bring your own water.

How to get to El Zapato
1 km from downtown Capilla del Monte. About 5 minutes by car or around 15 to 20 minutes walking from the center.
From the center of Capilla del Monte, take Hipólito Yrigoyen street toward Ruta Nacional 38. After crossing the highway, Avenida Las Américas leads to some low hills; then continue along a dirt road (about 600 m) to the parking area. From there, climb a staircase of about 40 meters to reach the top where the rock is. It's about 1 km from the center.
