Las Grutas de Ongamira
Caves with rock paintings 8,000 years old. Archaeological site of the Comechingones, 13 km from Capilla.
The Grutas de Ongamira are a set of rock shelters and hollows carved into enormous reddish sandstone walls, shaped by wind and water over millions of years. They are located in the Ongamira valley, north of the Sierras Chicas of Córdoba, at about 1,500 meters above sea level and within a private estate of about 60 hectares. The landscape combines red cliffs, mountain vegetation, streams, and hills that surround the valley, such as Pajarillo, Áspero, and Charalqueta. Beyond its natural beauty, the site holds enormous archaeological value: it was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years and preserves mortars, paintings, and traces of those occupations. In 2008, it was chosen as one of the Natural Wonders of Córdoba, and today it is a very popular excursion for those visiting the Capilla del Monte area.

A bit of history
The valley was inhabited more than 8,000 years ago by hunters of the Ayampitín culture, replaced around 200 AD by the Comechingones. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived seeking minerals, the natives resisted: in an ambush near the caves, led by Chief Onga (or Unca), they killed the encomendero Blas de Rosales. Then came Spanish reprisals led by captains Berrú, Ardiles, and Tejeda. Since 1940, the area has been studied by archaeologists such as Aníbal Montes and Alberto Rex González.

Arrive early to make the most of the light and avoid the midday heat. The property is private and requires a paid entrance, so bring cash in case other payment methods are not accepted. Stay on the trails and do not touch the archaeological remains. If you go during the rainy season, check the condition of the gravel road beforehand.

Comfortable walking shoes, water, sunscreen, hat, and a light jacket, since the weather changes quickly at altitude.

How to get to Las Grutas de Ongamira
25 km from downtown Capilla del Monte. Approximately 40 minutes by car.
From the center of Capilla del Monte, take Provincial Route 17 heading northeast, traveling about 25 km to the Ongamira valley. The road combines paved and gravel sections; it's a good idea to check current conditions before setting out, especially on rainy days.
