Los Terrones

Los Terrones is an indigenous, cultural, and recreational park located in the Quebrada de la Luna area, north of Capilla del Monte. What makes it unique is its landscape of reddish sandstones shaped by wind and rain over millions of years, forming whimsical figures that imagination has named: El Dedo de Dios, El Sillón, El Honguito, and Rostro del Indio, among others. Many know it as the 'Talampaya cordobés' for that otherworldly feel. It operates as a protected area and is toured with guides who explain the local geology and the passage of the Comechingones people, who used the ravine as a transit and herb-gathering zone. In addition to trekking, there is a rest stop with homemade food, restrooms, and regional products for sale, making it a comfortable outing for the whole family.

A bit of history

The area was inhabited and traversed by the Comechingones, who used it to gather herbs and left groups of mortars carved into the rock, possibly linked to rituals and astronomical observation. The reddish sandstone formations, rich in iron, were deposited and compacted over hundreds of millions of years, when the entire Valle de Punilla was a large sedimentary basin. Today the site operates as a protected park open to tourism.

URI's tips

The long circuit requires a guide and departures are usually at intervals, so it's best to arrive early and check the time of the last hike. If you're short on time or don't want to walk much, there's a short circuit to the viewpoint. Pets and overnight stays are not allowed. Bring cash in case the connection fails, and the rest stop has good-value homemade food to recharge your energy.

What to bring

Closed, lace-up footwear (mandatory for the long circuit), water, sunscreen, hat, and a light jacket depending on the season. Camera or phone for photos.
