Cerro Las Gemelas

NatureTrekkingDemanding difficulty Around 4 hours round trip (approximately 2 to 2.5 hours up and 1 to 1.5 hours down) 7 km from downtown

Two twin peaks of the Sierras Chicas. Challenging trekking with 360° views of the entire valley.

Cerro Las Gemelas is one of the most beautiful natural viewpoints in Capilla del Monte, in the Valle de Punilla. Its name comes from its twin peaks, similar in shape and size, which stand out against the mountain landscape. The summit reaches 1695 meters above sea level and is known as the best point to contemplate Cerro Uritorco, which stands opposite. The ascent starts from the Agua de los Palos complex and crosses mountain scrub, streams and rock formations until reaching a summit with 360-degree views. From the top you can see the town of Capilla del Monte, the dam, San Esteban and a good part of the valley to the west. It is a moderate-difficulty hike, ideal for those looking for a demanding but accessible trek, without reaching the level of Uritorco.

What makes this place unique

  • Privileged panoramic view of Cerro Uritorco from the summit
  • The twin peaks that give the hill its name
  • 360-degree panorama over Capilla del Monte, the dam and the Valle de Punilla
  • The Vía Crucis with fifteen stations sculpted by artist Scalisi within the grounds
  • The Agua de los Palos complex with swimming pool, restaurant and mountain scrub

A bit of history

The hill is named Las Gemelas after its twin summits, similar in silhouette, which dominate the landscape west of Capilla del Monte. Access is through Estancia Las Gemelas, a mountain estate of about 1060 hectares now turned into the Agua de los Palos tourist complex, which opened the trails to visitors. Within the grounds, a Via Crucis with fifteen stations sculpted by the artist Scalisi is preserved, integrated into the mountain route.

URI's tips

It is a moderate-difficulty hike, more accessible than the Uritorco one but it still requires physical fitness. Leave early, take enough water because the climb is continuous, and pay attention to the only fork on the trail so you don't lose the path. If you go without a guide, download the GPS track from Wikiloc beforehand.

What to bring

Trekking footwear or good-grip trainers, plenty of water, sunscreen, a cap, comfortable clothing, something to eat and a light jacket. Walking sticks for the descent and a camera for the views of Uritorco are recommended.
