The Tren de las Sierras station, now a tourist information point.

The old railway station of Capilla del Monte is one of the town's most beloved postcards. Built in stone at the end of the 19th century, it was for decades the gateway for tourists arriving to the Sierras of the Punilla valley. After years of neglect, the building was restored and in November 2023 it once again welcomed the Tren de las Sierras, which connects the city of Córdoba with the town. Today the grounds combine its railway function with that of a tourist and cultural space: people come here to take photos, wait for the train, or ask for information about tours. It is a place full of nostalgia, ideal to start or end a walk through the center of Capilla.

What makes this place unique

  • Historic stone building with its original gallery facing the platform
  • Arrival of the Tren de las Sierras, reopened in November 2023 after half a century
  • Classic photo spot rich in railway nostalgia
  • Located steps from the center, ideal to combine with a walk around town

A bit of history

The branch line that reached Capilla del Monte was inaugurated toward the end of the 19th century, when the railroad drove the tourist development of the entire Punilla valley. The station that remains today was actually the second in the town: previously the train stopped at the intersection of Pueyrredón and Moreno streets, where the Don Orione Institution now stands. The new building was constructed in stone, with a wide gallery facing the platform that served as a waiting room and ticket office, a side entrance with a turnstile, and the station master's house behind it. The service enjoyed its golden age in the mid-1960s, carrying locals and tourists from Córdoba, Buenos Aires, and Rosario. With the decline of the railroad, the branch line was interrupted in the early 2000s. Only in November 2023, after a restoration, did the Tren de las Sierras return to Capilla del Monte after half a century.
