Paso del Indio
Imposing geological formation. A moderate hike with panoramic views of Capilla del Monte.
Paso del Indio is one of the most popular attractions of the Los Mogotes massif in Capilla del Monte, in the Valle de Punilla. It is a narrow natural passage between enormous pink granite walls, one of the oldest rock formations in the country. The route is a low-intensity walk suitable for families, with wooden and stone stairs, small bridges over the river, and sections where the rocks come so close together that you have to pass sideways. The trail starts along the water and climbs among the walls until it reaches a narrow cave and a natural viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the valley and the ravine. The entire Los Mogotes complex is a private paid resort with grills, restrooms, and a store, ideal for combining trekking, river, and rest at the foot of the mountains.

A bit of history
Los Mogotes are a set of geological faults with pink granite walls, overhangs, and waterfalls bordering the Río Dolores, considered among the oldest rock formations in Argentina, shaped by millennia of differential erosion. The name Paso del Indio comes from local tradition: legend has it that the Comechingones people, original inhabitants of these mountains, used this narrow passage between the rocks as an escape route to flee from the Spanish conquistadors. Today it is a site of natural and cultural value integrated into the tourist circuit of Capilla del Monte.
URI's tips
Wear trekking shoes because you have to climb over some rocks; be careful with wet rocks as they are slippery. Arrive early in high season to get a good shady spot and grill. The circuit is suitable for children but requires accompaniment on the stair sections. For climbing or rappelling, do it only with certified guides.
What to bring
Closed-toe shoes with good grip, water, comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat. Avoid large backpacks because the passage is very narrow. If you're going to spend the day, bring grill supplies and a swimsuit.
